Presidential Races: The Battle for Power in the United States explores the history behind campaigning for president. It begins with the election of George Washington, who was the only person ever voted into office unanimously. Since then party nominees or their supporters have fought vigorous (sometimes downright mean and dirty) battles to win the White House. Two interesting facts…in the beginning years of our nation’s history the candidates did not actually campaign on behalf of themselves. That was considered undignified! And, newspapers were the only media presence. Today, running for president is a 24/7 process that involves the candidate and many staffers. As for media presence, that too is never-ending and includes television, radio, and the Internet.
